Myth Busters on Hypnosis… Scary or Not?

Why does Hypnosis scare some people?  There are many Myths About Hypnosis and these myths are being challenged every day.  Even though stage hypnotists and TV shows have damaged the public image of hypnosis, a growing body of scientific research supports its benefits in treating a wide range of conditions, including pain, stress management, depression, anxiety and phobias, as well as behavior modifications!

“Hypnosis works and the empirical support is unequivocal in that regard.  It really does help people,” says Michael Yapko, PhD, a psychologist and member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Hypnosis has been used for centuries for pain control, including during the Civil War when Army surgeons hypnotized injured soldiers before amputations. www.apa.org/monitor/2011/01/hypnosis.aspx

Hypnosis helps to facilitate a highly relaxed state of inner concentration and focused attention for the individual seeking relief in various areas of their lives.  Hypnotherapy Practitioners can best serve their clients by also teaching them to hypnotize themselves at home to reduce chronic pain, improve sleep, or alleviate some symptoms of depression or anxiety.  This is commonly referred to as Self-hypnosis.  Many practitioners of hypnosis will educate their clients on the concept and theory that “all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.”  What is meant by this is that the client is in complete control of their experience of the hypnotic state.

One of the most common myths about hypnosis is that the client is under the control of the Hypnotherapist and they can make you do things you may not want to do.  Actually the complete opposite is true, the client is in the drivers seat.  During a hypnosis session the hypnotherapist is offering a variety of suggestions to the client and the client has the complete freedom to either accept or reject the suggestion that is being offered.  If a suggestion goes against the clients moral or ethical beliefs, or is in conflict with the clients goals than the client will easily refused the specific suggestion.

Because of myths many people have declined the opportunity to experience the benefits of a formal hypnotherapy session and what is surprising is that in reality we all experience various forms of self-hypnosis on a daily basis.  It is similar to day dreaming or being so completely engrossed in a book or TV program that you may ignore someone speaking in the same room.  That is basically what hypnosis is.  Here is another example.    Just before falling asleep every night, we pass through a phase that is very similar to hypnosis.   In general, Therapeutic Hypnosis is a pleasant feeling of relaxation.

Clinical or medical hypnosis has been recognized by the American Medical Association since 1958, especially as a pain management tool.  Medical Hypnosis is gaining popularity as a method for combating a host of problems, from nicotine addiction to chronic pain.  Over the past few years, consumers have spent more money on alternative or integrative medicine, including hypnosis, than on conventional therapies, Dr. Thomas Nagy, a staff psychologist at the Center for Integrative Medicine at Stanford said.

Why not give hypnosis a try?  It’s safe and can be a very rewarding experience.  At the Southwest Institute of Healing Arts you can experience the benefits of hypnosis by attending the specialty clinics offered throughout the year.  Just go to the website wwww.swiha.edu and click on Specialty Clinics (under Our Clinics) to schedule your complimentary session!  At SWIHA, you can also train to become a hypnotherapist!

On behalf of SWIHA Success Center, we thought it would be nice to share some current statistics with you, just in case you are curious as to where you, or the industry you are interested in, currently stand!

Massage Therapists

  • Personal care services - A small increase is expected due to an increasing number of dedicated massage clinics in the personal care services industry.
  • Offices of chiropractors - A small increase is expected as massage therapy and bodywork are integrated into wellness treatments.
  • Hotels (except casino), motels, and all other traveler accommodations - A small increase is expected as more hotels offer massage therapy services.
  • Fitness and recreational sports centers - A small decrease is expected as fewer sports centers employ massage therapists.

  • Offices of physicians - A small increase is expected as more doctors, primarily those involved in cosmetic procedures, employ skin care specialists.

Please understand that we do NOT train “Counselors;” we provide solid ground in Hypnotherapy Training & Life Coaching Training as growing career paths.

Mental Health Counselors

  • Outpatient mental health and substance abuse centers - A small increase is expected as these workers are preferred over more expensive psychologists.
  • Residential mental retardation facilities - A very large increase is expected as these workers are preferred over more expensive psychologists.

Students will learn to enhance the effectiveness of hypnotic induction, pick up new deepening techniques, and improve their client interview skills. Study the art of communication skills of “great communicators” such as Tony Robins, Ronald Reagan, and even Jesus. Comprehend the inner working of communication. Discover how this assists our purposes in the areas of connectedness/ rapport, healing, public speaking, interpersonal relationships, business negotiation, values alignments, and more. The greater understandings of how we interrelate can lead to one being more effective within their purpose, so that ecological self-alignment and attunement to others is more natural. Common Hypnotherapy Myths

According to research and information from beahypnotherapist.comHypnotherapy is a proven therapeutic treatment recognized by the AMA and yet, for some, hypnosis carries some unjustified stigmas.  Here are five common misconceptions that often scare people away from this truly incredible healing art.

    1. “It’s a form of mind control” – This just isn’t the case. No one can be hypnotized against their will and in allowing relaxation and acceptance of the therapy to take place, you are essentially the one in control of your own mind and you can choose to stop it of your own free will at any point.

    2. “I will end up doing things I don’t want to do” – This is a common fear of many people unfamiliar with hypnosis as a form of therapy. Often times people picture the popular stage act hypnosis of people doing funny, and often times embarrassing, things. Again, you are in control at all times. The therapist simply guides you, but does NOT control you.

    3. “What if the therapist leaves me in a hypnotic state? Won’t I be stuck that that forever?” – No, even if the therapist were to walk out of the room, you would soon realize he/she was no longer talking and you would open your eyes and be awake or perhaps, due to the relaxed nature of the therapy, you might even fall asleep but would soon wake up without assistance.

    4. “I will be forced to spill my inner-most secrets to a total stranger.” – The therapist’s goal is to guide your mind on the path you wish to take. Many times patients may seek a therapist to retrieve repressed or forgotten memories. During hypnotherapy the mind may retrieve these memories; however, it is up to you as the patient whether or not you vocalize these thoughts to the therapist.

    5. “It would never work on me.” – At the very core of hypnosis, is relaxation. Though there is some amount of stress in everyone’s lives, we are all capable of relaxing at some point and relaxation is all that is needed to begin the guided imagery.

One question on many people’s minds is “What does it take to be a Hypnotherapist?”  It requires the ability to improve people’s lives is within reach.  A compassionate heart, combined with our comprehensive hypnotherapy certification program is the perfect formula for success.  As a hypnotherapy counselor, you will not only have the ability to help people daily, but to build a rewarding, full-time career.

    Hypnotherapy Career Outlook

Today people are beginning to look outside the realm of traditional medicine, steering toward the path of holistic health care. The average person is typically dealing with an emotional or physical illness, involving themselves or someone close to them. As people seek out solutions to these problems, the need for more holistic health care practitioners is on the rise. A career in hypnotherapy is not only rewarding, but is also profitable and in demand.  Check out our Hypnotherapy Classes at SWIHA today if any of this is interesting to you!  Again, for all Hypnotherapy Practitioners, please attend our Mind Body Wellness Conference 2011 and get continuing education units!
