Swiha Launched Online Website for Distance Holistic Health Education

launched their online website August 1, 2011, providing distance education, online classes, online degrees, online certificates and online programs, all centered in Holistic Health. The website is now live at www.online.swiha.edu.

Online SWIHA is the virtual education outlet for Southwest Institute of Healing ArtsSWIHAis known as a nationally accredited (ACCET) private college and community-healing center for Holistic Healthcare careers and continuing education.  Per their new site, they provide professional, affordable online education for those interested in entering the healing arts profession, continuing education, or personal and spiritual growth.

SWIHA Online Classes are built around the concept of community, and “serve as an extension of the spirit found on-campus.”  Through a combination of course designs based on learning communities, their online learning community seems to emphasize “connection, spirit, service and transformation.”

Brad Bouté, the Executive Director of Online Education describes SWIHA Online courses as “unique because of our focus on student-reflection and transformation.  Our discussions and assignments are designed to not only encourage students to demonstrate they understand the material, but to internalize it and incorporate it into their daily life.”

There is often a misconception of many online schools and online programs, as being easier to complete with less quality of material.  However, Bouté says that is not the case here.  “SWIHA Online courses ask students to DO and APPLY what they are learning, instead of simply reporting it on a quiz or exam.  Students must work with real clients, go to a grocery store, cook a meal, and explore services in their areas. As such, we rely on authentic assessment of a student’s ability to determine their success in a course, instead of one-dimensional testing.  Where possible, students are allowed to complete an assignment as an essay, or a presentation, or an audio recording, whichever accesses their strongest learning channel.”

Online SWIHA Students participate in their learning community from wherever a reliable Internet connection can be found, and then access course materials, discussions, learning communities, and faculty members.  They can access the system through a desktop or laptop computer, and in many cases, through a web-enabled mobile phone.

Per their Success Center, “SWIHA is committed to providing on-going entrepreneurial support for holistic healthcare practitioners in private practice and to those establishing or growing a business.  Our mission is to help individuals discover their gifts and graces, and support them in taking their skills and talents out into the world in a loving and profitable way.”

As an institution accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET), SWIHA is required to assess the quality and value of their online and on-campus training programs.  This process is done through verification of documented employment status for each graduate.  Employment documentation is essential, ensuring that training meets the needs of students.  Based on the intention for student employment selection, their placement department remains in contact with the student to validate their employment status and obtain the necessary documentation.

Aside from the employment inquiries, in all SWIHA student exit surveys, graduating students are also asked a series of questions to help the school assess levels of satisfaction and where there is room for improvement (online and on-campus).  Here is an example from a recent exit interview of a Mind Body Wellness Practitioner (ONLINE) graduating student with a specialty in Holistic Nutrition:

  • My overall experience at SWIHA was: Excellent
  • What did you like most about SWIHA and the training you received? “Finding a school with Spiritual focus was such a blessing!!!!!!”
  • What did you like least about the training you received? n/a

Hatha Gong Yoga at Spirit of Yoga

As a Video Producer and Media Specialist for Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, I get the rare honor and opportunity to witness a lot of really interesting things; full sessions of Hypnotherapy (amazing), Transformational Life Coaching, Auriculotherapy with KC Miller, Toe Reading/Soul Coaching (absolutely beautiful), Aromatherapy Therapeutic Touch, Neurolinguistic Programming, Baby Massage (way cute), Whole Foods Cooking (yummy leftovers), and the creation of a Yoga Wall right before my eyes, to name a few.  As the resident ‘fly on the wall’, I could tell you a few things about the content of some of the videos I’ve shot. A better idea would be to take the class and get the DVD for yourself.

Also as part of my job, I get the opportunity to take photographs at and around SWIHA for marketing and for Online Education, as well as portraits of the beautiful souls who work here when needed for the web sites or to post in the Student Services reception area.

Before beginning a candid video or photo shoot, one of my usual modus operandi is to announce, “I am invisible!”  Believe it or not, it often works and I can move about rolling video or snapping pics without as much as a glance.  If Harry Potter’s cloak was real, this would be what it must feel like. I am often sprawling out on the floor or contorting myself into corners to get ‘the shot’ and no one notices.  So fun!

One experience as of late is sticking in my mind.  I was called upon to take some photos for marketing and promotional purposes of a Hatha Gong Yoga class at Spirit of Yoga.  In yoga I consider myself a novice, although I began practicing many years ago, long before becoming part of SWIHA’s staff.  One of the many yoga philosophies I love is “Always a Practice, Never a Perfect”.  Primarily I have stuck with Classical Hatha, Flow and Power yoga.  I had never been to a Gong class and was not sure what to expect.  I was not sure if I would like the sound of the gong. So in yogic fashion, I left my expectations floating away, like a helium balloon intentionally released into the sky.

With this in mind, I entered the yoga studio for the Hatha Gong photo shoot and set my camera gear in the corner with nary a notice.  The students knew I was there, but they were clearly there to enjoy their yoga experience.  Class began as yoga classes do, with centering, breathing, inner focus and setting of intentions.  Man I heart yoga.

Not long into the class, instructor Duane Armitage struck the gong to seal and deepen the pose that was being held.  Wow.  The tone and vibration was amazing!  As the class continued and I snapped the photos, I could feel how the sound resonated with each individual practitioner around and within the room, and how the varying vibrations that Duane drew out of the gong complimented each different asana.  It is a surprisingly truly beautiful sound; fluid, elastic, like an electromagnetic wave. The gong fully filled and sealed each posture with a soul-filling, resonating tone.  I was in love.

The following Friday I had the opportunity to take my first Kundalini Yoga class taught by Aradhana Kaur.  Absolutely loved it.  Sat Nam! As a wonderful added bonus, Duane Armitage closed the class Shavasana with an astounding Gong Meditation.

Duane is the creator of SOY’s Hatha-Gong class and says the vibration of the Gong assists in moving energy through the body and activating the chakras.  Now that I have seen—and heard–it for myself, I understand.

I can’t wait to take a Hatha Gong class at SOY.  If you haven’t yet tried it, hope you take the opportunity soon!

Namasté!

~ A Personal Message from KC Miller regarding Randy Davila ~

“Have you ever met someone YOU absolutely knew was going to be a part of your destiny?  That’s exactly the way I felt the first time I met Randy on Facebook, let alone when I shook his hand of the first time.  This guy is the real-deal . . . he speak straight from the hip and right into your heart . . . when he makes eye contact with you he really sees you . . . Even though he is President of Hampton Roads Publishing he is as down-to-earth and genuine as any person I have ever met. Last year when I attended Randy’s workshop for people who believe they are destined to write a book I got sooooooooooo much more than just the how-to steps of writing a good book proposal . . . I got clarity about my life’s purpose and the part a book will play when the timing I right.  With all my heart I encourage YOU to come and experience Randy. Yes, you will learn about the book publishing business . . .yet more than that, you will have the opportunity to be in a small group of people who will get to meet this amazing motivator first hand . . . and understand what some of the ‘famous’ authors who have had their life work published by Hampton Roads Publishing have felt when they shook Randy’s hand for the first time.”
As an extra perk to this experience, Randy will also be speaking as the Keynote Speaker at the Gifts & Graces, Labor Of Love Event at SWIHA on September 7, 2012 at 6pm!  This will provide a fun and inspirational sneak peak at the next days workshop.  Bring along a friend or family.  Our Sept. 7 Labor of Love event is complimentary to all.

Swihas Holistic Education 20 Years in Service

Happy Birthday SWIHA!  Southwest Institute of Healing Arts is a nationally accredited (ACCET) private college and community-healing center for Holistic Healthcare careers and continuing education – and they have been in service now, open to the world, for 20 years today!  For those who do not know, SWIHA is dedicated to providing professional, affordable education (on-campus and online) for those interested in entering the healing arts profession, for those interested in continuing their education, as well as to those seeking personal andspiritual growth.  SWIHA is committed to providing on-going entrepreneurial support and career guidance through “Our Success Center” for holistic healthcare practitioners in private practice and to those establishing or growing a business.

Whether you seek to earn a degree, diploma, specialty certificate or take courses towards continuing education or personal development, you will receive more than an education at SWIHA; you’ll receive a transformative experience. SWIHA graduates ‘fully conscious’ health professionals in Massage Therapy, Yoga Teacher Training, Holistic Nutrition, Western Herbalism, Bodywork, Life Coaching, Hypnotherapy and so much more.

Their mission is to help individuals discover their gifts and graces, and support them as they share their talents with the world in a loving and profitable way. SWIHA embraces individual, community and global healing, and teaches how to ’Touch Lives, Heal Bodies & Free Souls.’

Founder of SWIHA, KC Miller shares a bit about WHO SWIHA was made for:

Has anyone ever called you an ‘odd-ball’ or suggested YOU didn’t ‘fit in’ . . . or maybe accused you of ‘dancing to the beat of your own drum?’  If so then YOU are not alone!  It seems that those of us who are called to study and master the Holistic Healing Arts are destined to travel the road less traveled.  Recently I was given a t-shirt with the phrase ‘Spiritual Gangster’ on the front; I considered the term a compliment.

Twenty years ago when I was guided to start Southwest Institute of Healing Arts (SWIHA) many people thought I was crazy . . . far-out . . . woo-woo . . . and probably a lot of other things.  However, from its humble roots, SWIHA has grown into an award-winning, state licensed, nationally accredited college offering Associate Degrees in Holistic Healthcare with a wide variety of diplomas, certificates, concentrations, and continuing education courses, both On-campus and Online, with one purpose in mind ~ to connect individuals with their inner guidance so as to discover their ‘gifts and graces’ and make a commitment as to how they would serve in the world.

IF you have even heard about SWIHA, we believe there are no accidents.  You, too, may be a ‘Spiritual Gangster,’ a rebel . . . a teacher . . . or a leader in this movement that is now rapidly becoming a part of the very fabric of our current reality . . . Holistic Health Care, Urban Farming, Energy Healing, Yogic Philosophy and Lifestyle, and so much more.  IF these words do not scare you, rather excite you about a new future for yourself and those you are ultimately being called to serve, please take a few minutes to explore what our Holistic College is all about. . . see what we have to offer . . . and listen to your own guidance.  Whether you are drawn to take a single class with us for personal or spiritual development, or you are drawn to a diploma or degree . . . may today be the day you choose with your heart, and not just your head, as to what your next step in life is . . .

Blessings,
KC Miller
