Old T-shirts Wanted for “UpCycling Bags” Eagle Project

SUpCycling Bags!”  Old, donated T-shirts of all sizes and colors will be turned into usable, every day bags to carry personal items, groceries, or whatever you need bags for!

The Message: Each shirt will include a flyer with information on the dangers of plastic bags, the importance of reusables and instructions for creating bags from t-shrits to encourage recipients to make their own bags  and share the idea with others.

Definition of UpCycling: Upcycling is a component of sustainability in which the use of waste materials to provide new products.  It is generally a reinvestment in the environment.  This process allows for the reduction of waste and use of virgin materials.

Upcycling is the practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value; in this case, T-shirts will be made into useful and trendy bags!

Project: Up-cycling used T-shirts to make bags for carrying personal items, groceries, whatever someone would usually need to carry in plastic or paper bags, like from the grocery.

Why Seth chose to Upcycle: This is his effort to help the environment!  Plastic bags have been found floating in the ocean where they choke, strangle, and starve wildlife, per NationalGeographic.com. According to data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2001, the US uses between 500 billion – 1 trillion plastic bags each year. (NationalGeographic.com)

Seth wants to help make it cool to carry reusable shopping bags, don’t you!?

Items needed: T-shirts, thread, scissors, sewing machines, items to decorate bags that are plain, work tables, trash bags and boxes to store bags in.  If you are able to donate any of these items, please read below!

Please help Seth Payson (of Troop 451) better the world, one t-shirt bag at a time!   “Scouting has always had a great respect for nature, and has helped shape me into a person who cares about what happens to our environment.  If you can help me out with a donation, I would truly appreciate it.”

~ Thank you, Seth Payson

IF you don’t have a sewing machine and want to do this yourself, here is helpful video that only requires duct tape, stapler and staples, a t-shirt and scissors!
